They were watching ducks on the river near the Kururugi Shrine. Sunshine glinted off the water, creating ribbons of flickering light that broke into millions of little ripples as the ducks passed through them. When the birds had safely passed, one of the little boys skipped stones on the water, face scrunched in displeasure whenever the stone failed to skip more than twice.
"Suzaku?" Nunnally's voice stopped him, mid-toss, and the stone fell harmlessly onto the bank.
The little girl sat on the picnic blanket, twirling a flower in her fingers as her brother carefully wove a crown of clover and dandilions for her. Suzaku looked over at the Britannian boy and shrugged; Lelouch seemed to like that sort of thing. It didn't seem weird anymore. Next to him, Nunnally smiled. "What do Japanese people wear?"
Suzaku blinked, then frowned. "Clothes."
He heard a snort come from the other boy. "Idiot."
He couldn't very well yell at Nunnally, so he focused the irritation on her brother, his friend. "Shut up!" he shouted, hands balled into fists. "It's true!"
Lelouch looked at him, chin raised high in the air. "Everyone wears clothes," he intoned. "She wants to know what clothes are special to Japan."
Nunnally's smile replaced the concern that had been growing as the boys had started bickering. "Yes," she said happily. "What is special? At home, ladies wear beautiful gowns, and men have suits or uniforms." Her brother's teeth had started grinding together, small hands curling around the crown's blossoms as if to crush them.
Suzaku failed to notice, but answering Nunnally's question would change the topic anyway. "I don't know..." he said, slightly uncomfortable. "Father wears his uniform all the time..." he drifted off, thinking hard before he perked up. "There are kimono." Not the kind Kaguya wore. What his mother had, once upon a very long time. "If you were Japanese, you would wear one."
The little girl tilted her head to one side, curious. "Ki-mo-no?" she echoed, trying out the word. Beside her, Lelouch mouthed the same word. "What does it look like?"
Suzaku thought quickly; it was summer. Summer was festival season, surely there was something coming up soon. "I'll tell you what," he said excitedly. "There's a festival next month. You can wear yukata when we go. Lelouch, you too."
"I don't want to wear women's clothes!"
The brunet boy bristled. "You calling me a girl, Lelouch?"
"You wear pants," the young prince sniffed. "I've seen you."
"Fine, you can wear my old stuff!"
Lelouch's expression shifted from haughty to cautious, but the grip on the flowers lessened considerably. "Hand me downs..."
"Oh shut up."
